The reserve sits on the edge of Bury, a proper mix of woodland and wetland that works best if you're already staying at Dearden Wood or nearby and fancy a proper walk rather than a quick poke around. You get woodland paths, open water, and the kind of bird watching that rewards patience - herons and kingfishers if you're lucky and quiet about it. The whole thing's manageable in an hour or two, though you could stretch it to half a day if you're the type to stop and stare. Kids will get bored if they're expecting a playground, but if they're into spotting wildlife or splashing about on accessible trails, there's enough to keep them occupied. The paths are mostly flat and well-trodden, so it's not demanding walking. Best visited early morning when the birds are active and you won't be dodging school groups. Free to wander, no facilities that I could find, so bring water. If you're based at Rossendale Holiday Cottages for a couple of nights, this is a decent way to stretch your legs without driving anywhere. It's the sort of place that doesn't demand hours of your time but does something useful - gives you a genuine bit of nature that feels separate from the town just beyond the tree line.
