Whinthorn Ridge

The walk up Whinthorn Ridge is a proper Yorkshire moorland slog, but it's over quick enough that you won't lose the will to live. Starting from near Harrogate, you're looking at a couple of hours up and back if you're not dawdling, with the reward being genuinely decent views across the Dales when the weather plays ball.

It's gritstone underfoot, the kind of terrain that keeps your ankles sharp and makes you grateful for proper boots. The ridge itself is windswept and open - nothing fancy, but there's something satisfying about standing at height when you've earned it on foot. Walkers will get the most from this one. The climb is straightforward enough for anyone reasonably fit, though it's not a destination for young kids who need constant entertainment or those after an easy stroll.

Timing matters. Early autumn is best - clearer skies, less mud, the heather actually looks like something worth photographing. Peak season weekends bring the usual Harrogate crowds, so weekdays are quieter. There's no visitor infrastructure up there, so bring your own water and snacks.

If you're based at Olicana Park or Breaks Fold Farm Glamping, both within a few miles, you've got a cracking local walk that doesn't require driving for hours into the Lakes. It slots neatly into a Yorkshire park holiday - enough of a walk to feel like you've done something proper, but short enough to leave your afternoon free for the pubs and tearooms around Harrogate.
