Whatman Park

The Medway Valley hides a proper gem at Whatman Park, a nature reserve that sits just outside Aylesford in Kent. This isn't the sort of place you'll find mobbed with tourists - it's a working landscape where chalk grassland meets woodland, and the paths meander through habitat that actually matters to wildlife rather than being manicured for Instagram.

You get genuinely interesting walking here, with routes ranging from gentle loops to longer stretches depending on your energy. The reserve is known for orchids in spring and butterflies through summer - if you're the sort who carries binoculars, this will keep you occupied for hours. Less dedicated strollers might manage a solid hour to ninety minutes and call it a day. The chalk grassland has that particular Kent quality - rolling, open, sometimes windier than you'd expect.

It's free to access, and there's no formal visitor infrastructure that I'm aware of, so bring water and dress for the weather. This works well as a morning walk if you're staying at one of the nearby holiday parks like Kits Coty Glamping or Oak View, both within three miles. You won't need to plan your entire day around it, but it's absolutely worth the detour if you're basing yourself in this corner of the Medway Valley.

Best visited between May and September when you'll actually see the reserve come alive. Winter walks are fine if you don't mind mud.
