Wetton Hill (East)

Standing at 1,200 feet above the Manifold Valley, this limestone summit delivers proper Peak District views without the crowds that plague Mam Tor. The eastern approach from Wetton village offers the gentlest route up, though you'll still feel it in your legs after the steady climb through traditional drystone wall country.

From the top, the panorama stretches across the White Peak's characteristic patchwork of fields and valleys. On clear days, you can spot the distinctive profile of Chrome Hill to the north and follow the winding Manifold Valley as it cuts through the landscape towards Ilam. The summit itself is unmarked - just a gentle grassy dome - but that's part of its appeal.

Serious walkers will appreciate this as a stepping stone on longer routes linking Wetton to Alstonefield, while families with older children (say 10-plus) will manage the hour-long ascent well enough. The descent back to Wetton takes about 45 minutes, making it a decent half-day outing.

If you're staying at one of the holiday parks around Hartington Hills or Bank House Farm Campsite, both less than two miles away, this makes a cracking morning walk before the afternoon thunderstorms that often roll in during summer. Just don't expect facilities at the top - pack water and snacks.
