Westwood Recreation Ground

The walk around Westwood Recreation Ground is quiet, proper quiet - the kind of place where you notice birdsong instead of fighting through crowds. It's essentially a nature reserve on the edge of Leek, with woodland trails, open grassland, and enough space that you won't feel hemmed in even on a decent weekend.

The ground itself is accessible and well-maintained, with paths suitable for families and mixed-ability walkers. You're looking at maybe 45 minutes to an hour if you do the full loop without rushing, though you can easily dip in and out for shorter strolls. The woodland section is genuinely pleasant - proper old trees, undergrowth that looks after itself, birds doing their thing. If you're after dramatic vistas or rare species, this isn't it. But if you want a straightforward, peaceful bit of green space with a genuine sense of being somewhere wild-ish, it delivers.

It works brilliantly as a morning or late-afternoon break if you're camped nearby. The Hollies and Leek Camping and Caravanning Club Site are both within three kilometres, making this a no-brainer for staying guests who want a gentle walk without loading the kids in the car. Winter and early spring are best - fewer insects, clearer lines of sight through the trees, and you might spot deer if you're lucky and quiet enough.

Free to access, no facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water if you're stopping long. It's the kind of reserve that rewards a proper look around rather than a quick trot through.
