About Weston Turville Reservoir Nature Reserve

The water here is absolutely still on a good morning, reflecting the sky so perfectly you can't tell where one ends and the other begins. Weston Turville Reservoir is a proper working water supply for the area, but it's also become one of the better spots in Buckinghamshire for watching birds and just standing about doing nothing, which is criminally underrated. You'll find cormorants, grebes, and if you're lucky, some of the rarer waders that pass through seasonally. There's a decent circuit walk around the perimeter - takes about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace - and the paths are generally well-maintained, though muddy patches are inevitable after rain. Bring binoculars. Leave the kids' iPad behind and watch them actually notice things for once. The reserve works year-round, but spring and autumn migrations are when you'll see the most interesting visitors. It's free, naturally, and costs nothing to park nearby either. The nearest proper town is Tring, just a few miles south, which has actual shops and cafes if you need feeding. If you're basing yourself at one of the local camping spots - Hill Farm is only two miles away and genuinely excellent - this makes for a cracking morning out before breakfast or a wind-down in the late afternoon. It's not dramatic, it's not Instagram-mad, and it won't take up your entire day. But that's rather the point. Sometimes you want somewhere quiet where the most exciting thing that happens is a kingfisher darting past.
