Hampden Pond

Water that catches the light properly - that's what you get at Hampden Pond near Tring. It's a shallow lake, really, more of an expanded millpond than anything grand, but it does the job brilliantly for a straightforward walk and a sit-down.

The pond itself is unremarkable to look at, but the paths around it are decent enough. You can work your way round the perimeter in maybe forty minutes without rushing, which makes it ideal if you've got restless kids or just want to stretch your legs after a drive. The water's still and dark - no jumping in - but there's usually a bit of wildlife about if you're patient. Nothing that'll blow your mind, mind you.

Where Hampden Pond actually earns its keep is as part of a broader ramble around the Tring area. The town itself has the Natural History Museum in Rothschild's old house, which is worth an hour if you're that way inclined, and the Grand Union Canal runs through. You can string together a proper countryside half-day without too much effort.

If you're based at one of the nearby campsites - Hill Farm Camping is closest at under two miles - this works as a quick leg-stretcher rather than a destination in itself. Families won't find it thrilling for more than an hour. Walkers using Tring as a hub will appreciate the flat, easy going. Free to access, no facilities to speak of. Go early if you want any peace.
