Westleton common

Westleton Common is a proper stretch of heathland just east of Saxmundham where you can actually breathe. It's the kind of place where locals walk their dogs and walkers cut through without fuss - no visitor centre, no gift shop, just open heath with gorse and heather doing their thing depending on the season.

The common itself is fairly straightforward. You get wide tracks crisscrossing the heath, some sandy paths, decent views across the Suffolk countryside. In late summer the heather blooms purple and it's worth timing a visit for that. Spring brings an explosion of gorse. The whole area feels like it could disappear under housing tomorrow, which somehow makes it feel more precious.

This works best for walkers who appreciate unmanicured space and don't need telling what they're looking at. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes unless they're the type who enjoy spotting birds or collecting interesting stones. Dog walkers absolutely love it - the tracks are good and it's unfenced.

It's free and there's no formal opening hours, though you'll want daylight and ideally not after heavy rain when the sandy bits get boggy. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a proper wander. It sits nicely between Saxmundham and the coast, close enough to the caravan parks like Mill Hill Farm and Cliff House if you're basing yourselves nearby. Worth combining with a push towards the beach or a visit to nearby Minsmere if you're in the area, but don't make it a special trip unless you're already local.
