Westfield Wood

Westfield Wood sits just inland from Hythe, a proper working forest that doesn't try too hard to be anything it isn't. You won't find manicured trails or visitor centres here - it's the real deal, ancient woodland where you can actually walk without bumping into tour groups. The trees are dense enough that even on busy days it feels quiet, which counts for something.

Walkers will get the most from this one. The paths wind through mixed woodland with decent views if you know where to look, and it's the kind of place that rewards you for getting a bit lost. Bring proper boots though - the ground holds water, especially after rain. Allow a couple of hours to do it properly rather than rushing through in forty minutes.

It works brilliantly as a break from Port Lympne Safari Park just down the road. If you've spent the morning watching lions and giraffes, an afternoon of quiet forest air and actual birdsong feels restorative. There's something grounding about it. The nearby Hythe town centre offers cafes and shops, so you can make a proper day of it without feeling like you're stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Free to access, which is refreshing. Best visited midweek if you can swing it - weekends bring day-trippers and the peace gets diluted a bit. Pack a flask, ditch your phone, and remember why you came to Kent.
