West Wong Plantation

You won't find West Wong Plantation on many tourist radars, but that's rather the point. It's a proper working forest just outside Newark, the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - or at least hear the wind moving through the trees without someone's Instagram caption ruining it. The plantation itself is coniferous woodland, dark and dense, with woodland paths that feel genuinely quiet even on weekends.

Walking here is the main event. Bring proper boots if the ground's been wet - it gets boggy in places - and allow a good hour or two to properly explore without rushing. The air smells right, the light filters strangely through the pines, and you won't be jostling with crowds. It's not one of those manicured forest attractions with information boards every fifty metres. This is honest woodland.

History enthusiasts might find the site interesting for its forestry heritage, though information on the ground is minimal. Families with young kids should manage the easier paths fine, though it's not a destination with amenities or play areas - bring everything you need. The site works brilliantly as a walking break if you're staying at Wagtail Country Park just three miles away, or using it as a base between the glamping spots at Witham Grange or Secret Garden.

Accessibility and opening hours aren't published anywhere obvious, so ring ahead or check locally in Newark. It's free to visit if you find your way in - bring a map, though.
