Icehouse Plantation

The forest at Icehouse Plantation spreads across Lincolnshire's flatlands just south of Newark, a proper working woodland rather than a manicured visitor attraction. You're walking among mature trees with actual history - the 'icehouse' reference harks back to when ice was harvested and stored here in winter, though you won't find much to show for it now. What you do get is peace, decent woodland trails, and the sort of quiet that's in short supply around the Midlands.

It's ideal if you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Secret Garden or Witham Grange and want a proper walk without driving miles. The forest isn't dramatic or particularly scenic - no sweeping vistas, no viewpoints - but it's authentic woodland walking. You could spend an hour here or three depending on how far you fancy going. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes.

Access details are thin on the ground - no visitor centre, no facilities that I'm aware of. Go in daylight, wear decent boots if it's been wet, and don't expect signage or tea rooms. It works best as part of a wider Lincolnshire trip rather than a destination in itself. Combined with Wagtail Country Park five miles away if you want something with more amenities, you could build a solid day around it.
