West Holmes Field

The moorland around Ilkley hides some proper walking territory, and West Holmes Field is where you start to understand why locals have been tramping these hills for centuries. It's a nature reserve that doesn't shout about itself - no visitor centre, no café, just open grassland and the kind of light that changes every twenty minutes depending on the clouds rolling in from Lancashire.

You're looking at rough pasture dotted with heather, the occasional stone wall cutting through, and views that stretch towards Wharfedale. Most people use it as a jumping-off point for longer walks rather than a destination in itself, which is fair enough. The paths are straightforward enough - muddy in winter, firm underfoot when dry - and it's the sort of place where you spot lapwings and curlews if you're quiet about it.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young legs will find it works fine as a half-hour meander, though there's not much to hold attention once they've seen a few birds. History buffs won't find much to engage with here - it's all about the landscape itself, not stories attached to it.

Getting there from Ilkley takes about ten minutes by car, or it's a decent walk from town if you're based at one of the nearby parks like Olicana or Brown Bank. Draughton Heights and Breaks Fold both put you within reasonable striking distance if you want moorland without the Ilkley crowds. No admission fee that I'm aware of, and there's no set visiting hours - it's the kind of place you head out to when the weather's decent and the light's right.
