West Hills

The walk up West Hills rewards you with views that stretch across Angus and into the Highlands proper - on a clear day you can see for miles. It's a proper hill walk rather than a casual stroll, but nothing that'll leave you gasping if you're reasonably fit. The path's well-trodden and the moorland around you opens up as you climb, which beats being hemmed in by trees the whole way.

Forfarites use this one regularly, and you'll understand why once you're up there. The summit itself isn't dramatic - no stone cairn to mark the top - but that's almost better because you can sit and actually look around rather than queue for a photo. Allow a couple of hours for the round trip depending on your pace and how long you linger.

It's the sort of walk that suits families with older kids who don't need coddling, and solo walkers after some headspace. Bring a waterproof - the Scottish Highlands have a way of finding you even when the forecast looks promising. Winter can make the moorland boggy, so autumn or spring tends to work better.
