Forfar Loch Country Park

The loch itself is the main draw here - a proper freshwater lake ringed by walking paths that don't demand much from you but give back plenty. You can do a full circuit if you're feeling keen, or potter around the near side for an hour and call it a day. The water's deep and still, and on a decent morning you'll spot herons picking along the margins and the odd splash of a pike breaking the surface.

It's the kind of place that works well for families who want to burn off some energy without hiking boots and packed lunches. Kids will happily chase around the pathways, and there's enough birdlife to keep them interested - bring binoculars if you've got them. The flat terrain means even younger walkers won't grumble halfway round.

Forfar itself sits just south, so it's easy to combine this with a town wander if the weather turns rough. For a longer stay, Greenhillock Glamping is about five miles away and worth considering if you want something more comfortable than a tent. The park fills up nicely at weekends but feels genuinely quiet on weekday mornings - go then if you can.

There's nothing flashy about it, and that's rather the point. It's straightforward, free, and genuinely pleasant. Allow ninety minutes for a decent walk, or half an hour if you're just passing through Forfar and want a quick leg-stretch.
