Barry Mill (National Trust for Scotland)

You can watch the mill machinery in action, see how grain becomes usable flour, and there's enough here to keep you occupied for a solid hour or so. The waterwheel is the real draw - it's hypnotic watching it turn, especially if you time it right and catch a miller doing a demonstration. Kids find it genuinely interesting rather than boring, though younger ones might lose interest once they've seen the wheel a few times.

It's run by the National Trust for Scotland and sits just outside Forfar, making it a logical stop if you're exploring rural Fife. The surrounding countryside is proper walking territory - rolling fields, quiet roads, the kind of landscape that rewards a wander.
