West Hill

The Iron Age hillfort at West Hill commands proper views over the Gloucestershire countryside, and you can actually walk the ramparts without having to pay or book anything in advance. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of effort - the climb isn't brutal, but it's steep enough that you'll feel you've earned the vista once you're up there.

What you get is a textbook example of defensive earthworks: concentric ditches and banks that would have been formidable back around 500 BC. The fort itself sits on high ground just outside Gloucester, making it easy to reach from the town centre without needing to trek deep into countryside. The ramparts are substantial enough that you can trace the layout clearly, and on a clear day the panorama across the Vale of Gloucester is genuinely worth the walk.

History enthusiasts will get the most from this one - archaeology students practically live here during excavation seasons, and if you time it right you might catch an active dig. But families with restless kids might find it a bit thin on the ground for entertainment; there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, just you and 2,500 years of earthwork.

Allowing an hour should cover a proper exploration. Go on a weekday if possible to avoid weekend muddle, and wear decent boots because it gets boggy after rain. If you're basing yourself at one of the caravan parks within a few miles - Tudor or Pepper Pot are your closest options - this makes a solid half-day excursion alongside a walk around Gloucester's cathedral quarter.
