Maiden Hill

Standing at 201 metres, this modest Cotswold hill delivers surprisingly good views across Gloucestershire without the crowds that flock to better-known spots. The walk up from Painswick village takes about 40 minutes through lovely beech woods, though the final approach can get muddy after rain.

From the summit, you'll see across to the Severn Vale and the Welsh hills beyond on clear days. It's not dramatic - this isn't the Lake District - but there's something properly satisfying about earning those views on foot. The hill forms part of the Cotswold Way, so you'll encounter the odd serious walker with proper boots and a determined expression.

Families with older children will manage the climb fine, though toddlers might struggle with the steeper sections near the top. Dog walkers love it here - plenty of space to let them off the lead once you're away from the main path.

The beauty of Maiden Hill is its accessibility from several holiday parks around Painswick and the wider Stroud area. Stay at one of the glamping sites like Middle Lypiatt or Painswick Glamping, and you can be on the trail within 20 minutes. It makes for a decent morning's exercise before lunch at one of Painswick's excellent pubs.
