West Dun Hill

The walk up West Dun Hill isn't dramatic, but that's rather the point. You get a proper sense of accomplishment without needing ropes or technical gear, which makes it ideal if you're staying at High Hall Farm Campsite nearby and fancy a half-day outing without the usual fell-bagging faff.

It's a modest height - nothing that'll leave you gasping - but the views across the Pennines and towards the Lake District are genuinely worthwhile. The terrain is straightforward fell walking: grass, bog in places when it's been wet, and a clear enough path most of the way up. Allow two to three hours there and back depending on your pace and how long you want to linger on top.

Who'll enjoy it? Families with kids who can manage a steady uphill trudge without complaining too much, and walkers after a straightforward afternoon without epic distance or scrambling. If you're the type who needs dramatic drops and Alpine views to feel satisfied, you might find this a bit tame.

The nearest town is Carlisle, which is handy for supplies and a decent pub afterwards. Timing-wise, clear weather makes all the difference up here - a misty day and you'll lose whatever view you came for. Early morning or late afternoon in decent conditions works best.

It slots nicely into a Cumbrian camping trip as a no-fuss peak without needing mountaineering experience. Worth the effort for what it is.
