West Down

Standing at 204 metres, this modest chalk down offers one of Dorset's most rewarding views for the effort involved. The climb from West Lulworth takes about 20 minutes through farmland and along well-defined footpaths, with the gradient steady rather than punishing.

From the summit, you'll get a proper panorama of the Jurassic Coast stretching east and west. Lulworth Cove sits directly below like a perfect blue horseshoe, while Durdle Door's famous limestone arch is clearly visible to the west. On clear days, the Isle of Wight floats on the horizon.

Walkers will love this one - it's part of the South West Coast Path and makes an excellent warm-up before tackling longer sections. Families with older children (say 8+) should manage it fine, though toddlers might struggle with the final steep section. The exposed summit can be windy, so pack layers even on warm days.

Being downland, it's accessible year-round and completely free. Allow an hour return from West Lulworth village, or incorporate it into a longer coastal walk. The view alone justifies the climb, though photography enthusiasts should time it for late afternoon when the light catches the cliffs beautifully.
