Winfrith Hill

Standing at 285 metres, this modest hill delivers proper Dorset views without the crowds that swamp nearby Corfe Castle. The climb from West Lulworth takes about 45 minutes through farmland and gentle slopes - nothing too taxing, though proper walking boots help on the chalky paths after rain.

Families with older children will find it manageable, but toddlers might struggle with the distance. The summit itself is fairly unremarkable - just grassland with a trig point - but the panorama across the Purbeck Hills more than compensates. On clear days you can spot the Isle of Wight and the full sweep of the Jurassic Coast.

Walkers often combine it with the longer South West Coast Path sections, making a proper day of it. The hill sits conveniently between several holiday parks, with Sandyholme and Warmwell both within easy driving distance for those staying further inland.

Best visited early morning or late afternoon when the light's softer and you'll likely have it to yourself. Allow two hours for the round trip from West Lulworth, longer if you're dawdling with cameras or picnics. Free to access year-round, though the exposed summit can be brutal in winter winds.
