Burngate Wood & Park Wood

Dense woodland carpets the hillside above West Lulworth, offering proper countryside rambling just minutes from the tourist crush of Lulworth Cove. Burngate Wood and Park Wood merge into one sprawling canopy of oak, ash and beech that's particularly lovely in autumn when the leaves turn copper and gold.

Walkers will find this spot well worth the effort. The paths wind through both ancient woodland and newer plantations, with glimpses of the Dorset coast through the trees on clearer days. It's not signposted like some of the more famous walks in the area, which means you'll likely have the place largely to yourself.

Families staying at nearby parks like Sandyholme Holiday Park or Warmwell Holiday Park will find it a good escape from beach crowds. The terrain isn't too challenging for older children, though pushchairs would struggle on the uneven forest floor. Allow a couple of hours for a proper explore.

Dog owners particularly rate these woods - there's enough space for a good run without worrying about livestock or traffic. The lack of formal facilities means bringing your own refreshments, but that's half the appeal of this unpretentious slice of Dorset countryside. Best avoided after heavy rain when the paths turn properly muddy.
