About Wenallt
This is a walker's spot, pure and simple. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might struggle with the length rather than the difficulty. The summit rewards you with open country feeling and on clear days you can pick out ridges and valleys all the way across Mid Wales. On a grey afternoon it's less forgiving - bring proper waterproofs because weather moves in quickly here.
There's no visitor centre, facilities, or admission charge to speak of. Just turn up and walk. Allow two to three hours for a gentle round trip, longer if you're planning a picnic or want to sit about taking photos. It works brilliantly as a morning sortie if you're based at one of the caravan parks near Hay-on-Wye, which sits just down the road. Chapel House Farm Campsite and Borders Hideaway are close enough that you could walk from your pitch if you fancied it, though the minor roads aren't ideal for that. Go early if you want solitude. Late afternoon light can be lovely up there, but you'll want daylight to find your way back.
