About Hen Allt
The path climbs steadily through farmland and rough moorland, taking around two hours to reach the top from Hay. The summit itself is fairly open and windswept - bring a windproof even when the forecast looks benign. On a decent day you can see for miles. On a grey one, you're basically walking into cloud. Still worth doing, mind you.
This is ideal territory for walkers who want something accessible but not trivial. Families with kids aged eight or older will manage it fine if you take your time and let them set the pace. History types won't find much on the hill itself, but the Wye Valley below is saturated with it - medieval Hay Castle sits just down the valley.
Full free access - no gates, no fees. Allow a half day including a sit-down at the top with a flask. If you're based at Hay-on-Wye Caravan Park or any of the other sites dotted around the valley, you've got the walk pretty much on your doorstep. Combine it with a mooch around Hay's bookshops for a solid day out.
