Well Head Hill

The walk up Well Head Hill rewards you with proper views across the Yorkshire Dales - the kind that make you understand why people move to this part of Lancashire. It's a straightforward climb from Skipton direction, nothing too dramatic in terms of gradient, but it'll take a good hour or so depending on your pace and how often you stop to catch your breath and admire the limestone moorland.

Once you're up there, you get that satisfying sense of perspective. The fell stretches out in all directions - dry stone walls running into the distance, patches of moorland turning purple in late summer, and on a clear day you can see proper far. It's the sort of walk that appeals to families with kids who can manage a couple of hours on their feet, and to anyone wanting to understand the landscape without needing technical climbing gear.

The walk itself is free - you're on open access land - and there's no entrance fee or facilities to worry about. Start early if you can, especially in summer when the car parks fill up. Allow two to three hours return from the nearest trailhead, longer if you're photographing everything or having a picnic on the summit.

If you're staying at one of the glamping pods in the area - Malham or Coxons Farm are within striking distance - this fits nicely into a broader Dales exploration. Combine it with walks around Malham Tarn or the Janet's Foss waterfall nearby and you've got a cracking day out. Worth doing, worth the effort, and you won't feel robbed of time if the weather turns.
