Well head

The Well Head sits just outside Bishop Auckland, a straightforward stone structure marking where fresh water once emerged from the ground - the kind of thing that would have been absolutely vital to a medieval settlement. It's not flashy or Instagram-worthy, but it's the real thing, properly old and quietly fascinating if you're interested in how people actually lived before mains water arrived.

History-minded walkers tend to get more out of it than families with young kids, to be honest. It's free to visit and accessible year-round, though there's not much in the way of facilities nearby. Winter's actually better - fewer tourists and you get a clearer sense of the landscape. If you're camping at The Gables Pod or Eden Grange Glamping just down the road, it's a reasonable leg-stretch walk. The Witton Castle site is also close by if you want to string together a proper history-focused afternoon.

Don't expect crowds or crowds or parking. That's actually rather the point. It's the sort of place that rewards curiosity and punishes aimlessness.
