Watership Down

The chalk downland around Watership Down rises abruptly from the Hampshire-Berkshire border near Newbury, offering proper views across the North Downs and a genuine sense of being somewhere wild. This isn't a manicured peak - it's open grassland where you'll spot rabbits (inevitably), skylarks, and on clear days, visibility stretches for miles. Most walkers tackle it as part of a longer ramble across the downs rather than a destination unto itself, which is fair enough.

It's the Richard Adams connection that draws many people. The 1972 novel was set here, and if you've read it or seen the film, walking these slopes feels properly atmospheric - less "theme park experience" and more atmospheric countryside. Allow two hours for a straightforward up-and-back from the nearest car park, longer if you're doing a circular walk through the surrounding farmland.

Families with older kids (eight plus) who actually enjoy walking will find it rewarding. Younger children might find it a bit exposed and featureless after 20 minutes. The terrain is manageable but genuinely hilly - bring decent boots, especially after rain when it gets boggy.

There's no admission charge and no facilities on the downs themselves. The nearest towns are Newbury and Kingsclere for provisions. If you're camping at Bishops Green Farm Campsite or Hollington Park Glamping nearby, this makes a decent morning walk before settling back at your pitch. Cherry Bird Country Park offers more facilities if you want something gentler alongside this.
