Waters of Philorth Local Nature Reserve

The Philorth watercourse winds through a proper slice of Aberdeenshire countryside just outside Fraserburgh, and this local nature reserve is where things get interesting. You're walking alongside the river through mixed woodland where you'll spot roe deer if you're quiet, and in spring the banks erupt with bluebells. The reserve isn't vast - you can cover the main trails in an hour or so - but it's genuine habitat rather than manicured parkland.

This is ideal territory for anyone who actually enjoys a woodland walk without the crowds. Birdwatchers will find it worthwhile; the riverside setting attracts everything from grey herons to kingfishers, and the bird hide gives you a decent vantage point without spooking anything. Kids will manage the paths fine if they're reasonably mobile, though it's not a destination where they'll run wild for hours.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is rather the point. Admission is free and you can turn up whenever suits you. The real value comes if you're based at Down On The Farm nearby - it's within easy reach for a morning or afternoon break from the holiday park, giving you a proper outdoor breath without needing to drive far.

Best visited outside peak tourist season when you'll have the paths largely to yourself. The ground can be boggy in places after heavy rain, so proper footwear matters. It's the sort of spot that rewards a slow pace and binoculars rather than big expectations.
