Warren Hill

Warren Hill offers proper Yorkshire moorland walking without the crowds you'll find on the bigger peaks nearby. It's a modest summit just outside Harrogate, the sort of place locals know well but visitors often miss. The walk itself takes you across open heathland with views across Nidderdale - nothing dramatic, but genuinely lovely when the light's right. Allow a couple of hours for a steady climb and a poke around the top. Free to access, naturally. This works well if you're camping at Clarion Lodge or Olicana Park - both within easy striking distance - and you want something less demanding than a full day out. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find the moorland a bit exposed and windy. The real appeal here is the relative peace. You won't queue, you won't pay, and you'll get a solid walk without the tourist machinery. Best on clear days when you can actually see something from the top. In poor weather it's just soggy grass and mist, which loses its appeal fast. If you're based at Moor Valley Country Park or one of the other sites within the five-mile radius, this fits nicely into a quieter day between bigger attractions. Spring and autumn are cracking times - summer can be a bit muddy, winter potentially treacherous depending on conditions.
