The Wansbeck River cuts through Ashington with a decent stretch of parkland that's more functional than flashy, but it's exactly what a working town needs. The riverside walk itself is straightforward - you get tree cover along the water, a bit of grass, the sort of place locals actually use rather than somewhere you'd make a special trip for. That said, if you're based at one of the nearby holiday parks like Sandy Bay or Church Point, it's a handy spot to stretch your legs without driving anywhere.

Families with younger kids will find it pleasant enough for an hour's potter about. The paths are mostly level and manageable, though don't expect riverside cafes or playgrounds that'll keep them occupied all afternoon. Dog walkers seem to treat it as their own, which tells you something about how established it is locally. The real appeal is the simplicity of it - no entrance fees, no queues, just a bit of green space and water.

Timing-wise, spring and summer work better when the riverside feels less grey. Winter walks are fine too if you don't mind it being a bit bleak.
