Walpole Bay Tidal Pool

The concrete pools at Walpole Bay near Birchington are a proper seaside oddity - built into the beach itself and filled by the tide twice daily. What you get is a natural paddling pool without the chlorine, complete with whatever marine life decides to stop by. Kids absolutely love it, and there's something oddly satisfying about watching the water level rise and fall.

It's free and accessible year-round, though obviously the tidal timing matters. At high tide the pools fill up beautifully; at low tide they're still worth a poke around for rock pools and the occasional crab. Allow thirty minutes to an hour - not a full day activity, but brilliant if you're staying nearby and fancy a break from the beach itself.

Walpole Bay works well alongside Birchington Vale Holiday Park, just down the coast. The pool itself doesn't demand much effort or cost, making it ideal for a quick morning visit before heading elsewhere. The novelty wears off quickly for teenagers, but younger children stay entertained longer, especially if the tide's coming in.

Go on a calm day if you can - rough seas mean the pools get churned up and murky. And do check tide times beforehand; turning up at low tide when the pools are shallow and weedy is a bit disappointing. It's unpolished, unglamorous, and utterly British in the best way.
