Walpole Bay

The beach at Walpole Bay, just outside Birchington, is one of those stretches of Kent coast that rewards a proper look around rather than a quick visit. What makes it work is the rock formations - proper geological drama with strata running at angles through the cliffs, the sort of thing that keeps geologists entertained for hours and kids scrambling over stones for the afternoon.

It's pebbly, sloping gently into the sea, and backed by modest cliffs. The beach itself feels less crowded than some Kent spots, which makes it good for families wanting a bit of space, and walkers keen to explore the foreshore without tripping over deckchairs. Low tide reveals rock pools worth investigating, though it's not a swimming beach in the traditional sense - more a place for geology, beachcombing, and bracing walks along the water's edge.

Allowing an hour is realistic for a casual visit; three if you're serious about exploration or the rock pools have caught the kids' interest. It's free to access, being a beach, though parking near Birchington itself can be tight in summer. Best visited out of peak season when the foreshore feels properly wild rather than cordoned off.
