Wallace Park

Wallace Park sits just outside Kinross in Perthshire, a proper nature reserve that punches above its weight. The main draw here is the woodland trails - nothing too taxing, but genuinely pleasant if you want to stretch your legs without a serious hike looming ahead.

The reserve itself is manageable in size, which means you won't wander for hours wondering if you've missed something. There's actual wildlife here too: red squirrels if you're lucky, birds you'd recognise, the occasional roe deer if you're patient enough. The woodland's mature in places, feels like you've stepped away from things even though Kinross is barely down the road.

It's ideal for families with younger kids or anyone after a gentle nature walk - the kind of outing where you don't need specialist kit, just proper shoes and maybe a packed lunch. Give it two to three hours if you want to do it properly without rushing. The real value comes if you're basing yourself at somewhere like Maycroft Retreat nearby - close enough for a morning wander without eating into a full day's plans.

The reserve works best in spring and early autumn when the light's best and the undergrowth isn't totally overgrown. Summer's fine if you don't mind the heat, but winter can feel a bit flat. Free to access and no faffing about with opening times - you can essentially pop in whenever suits. Not life-changing, but genuinely worth the short drive from town if you're craving something green and quiet.
