Walberswick Harbour

The harbour at Walberswick is one of those places that rewards you for bothering to find it. Just a short walk from Southwold, this working fishing village feels properly removed from the tourist trail - no gift shops, no crowds, just boats and weathered nets and the smell of salt. You'll see a handful of traditional fishing boats bobbing at their moorings, the sort of scene that makes you understand why painters have been coming here for over a century. The shingle beach runs alongside, and there's a decent walk along the riverbank towards the old lifeboat house if you've got energy to burn.

It's less a formal attraction and more a place to sit, watch, and genuinely relax. Families with young kids will get a kick out of spotting the boats and crabs in the shallows, though it's not the sort of spot where children will be entertained for hours on end. Free to visit, naturally, and accessible year-round, though winter brings proper weather that's both dramatic and occasionally punishing.

Staying at one of the nearby parks - Pigs in Blankets is genuinely first-rate and walkable from here - means you can pop in without the faff of planning. Combine it with a proper afternoon in Southwold proper for fish and chips and the pier. Walberswick works best as part of a broader Suffolk coast exploration rather than a destination in itself, but it's the kind of place you'll find yourself returning to.
