Wolsey Creek Viewing Platform

The walk out to Wolsey Creek takes you through proper Suffolk marshland - flat, quiet, and genuinely rather lovely once you've got your head round the lack of dramatic hills. It's about twenty minutes on foot from Southwold town centre, heading east through the salt marshes until you hit the viewing platform itself. From there, you get unobstructed views across the creek towards the North Sea, with wading birds doing their thing in the mud below and that particular quality of light you only get on the Norfolk and Suffolk coast.

This is fundamentally a spot for walkers and birdwatchers rather than anyone after a conventional "attraction". There's no cafe, no facilities, no visitor infrastructure - just you, the platform, and the marsh. A pair of binoculars transforms it from pleasant to genuinely rewarding. Families will find it worthwhile if the kids are the type to get excited about spotting redshank and curlew; if they need ice cream and a gift shop, they'll be bored inside ten minutes.

If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Pigs in Blankets is closest at just over two miles - it's an easy morning walk that breaks up the holiday routine without demanding serious effort. Allow forty minutes there and back if you're not lingering. Go early or late in the day when the light's better and the marsh feels less exposed to whatever the weather's throwing at you. Free, obviously, and accessible year-round, though winter is genuinely better for birds and atmosphere.
