Wainwright Memorial & Viewpoint

A modest stone cairn on the moors above Blackburn marks where Alfred Wainwright, the fell-walker and guidebook author, scattered his ashes. On a clear day you can see right across Lancashire toward the Pennines, which is exactly the sort of landscape Wainwright spent his life mapping and celebrating.

Real fell enthusiasts will make the pilgrimage; casual ramblers might find it a worthwhile detour if they're already exploring the moorland around Blackburn. There's something quietly affecting about standing at the spot where someone who wrote so passionately about these hills was finally laid to rest. It feels personal rather than grand.

Allow an hour return from the nearest car park. The memorial itself takes ten minutes to appreciate - it's not the kind of place that holds your attention for long. Winter isn't ideal when visibility drops. Free, obviously. If you're staying at Dale Hey Farm just down the way, it's an easy afternoon circuit that connects you to a bit of walking history. Worth doing once if Wainwright means something to you; worth skipping if you're just after a scenic viewpoint with more substantial attractions nearby.
