River Ribble

Flowing through Lancashire's rolling countryside, the River Ribble cuts a proper meandering path that's caught my attention more than once. This isn't some grand lake despite what the classification suggests - it's a working river that winds its way through the Ribble Valley, offering decent walking along its banks and some surprisingly good fishing spots.

Families will find plenty to keep the kids occupied, especially around the stretches near Blackburn where the towpaths are well-maintained. The riverside walks are fairly flat, making them suitable for pushchairs, though you'll want to keep an eye on little ones near the water's edge. Anglers rate it highly for coarse fishing, particularly roach and chub.

What strikes me most is how accessible it feels - no entrance fees, no set opening hours, just a proper Lancashire river doing what rivers do best. Allow a couple of hours if you're planning a family walk, longer if you fancy a proper ramble upstream.

Staying at one of the nearby holiday parks makes perfect sense. The river works well as a gentle day out between more energetic Pennine adventures, though don't expect dramatic scenery. It's quietly pleasant rather than spectacular.
