Blackburn's position in east Lancashire makes it a proper gateway to some cracking countryside. The River Ribble cuts through the landscape nearby, while Old Park Wood and Mire Wood offer decent woodland walks when you need to escape the urban sprawl. For something different, seek out the Alfred Wainwright memorial or climb to The Tank Toposcope for sweeping views across the Pennine foothills.

Getting here couldn't be easier. Mill Hill and Cherry Tree stations put you on the Preston-Colne line, with regular connections to Manchester and beyond. The M65 runs practically through the town centre if you're driving.

What makes this area work for a holiday park break is the combination of easy access and genuine exploration potential. You're 20 minutes from the Forest of Bowland, half an hour from the Yorkshire Dales, yet close enough to nip into town for supplies or a proper pub lunch. The surrounding Ribble Valley countryside is lovely - rolling hills, stone villages, decent walking without the tourist crowds you'll find further north. It's Lancashire at its most authentic, really.
