Waggy Tail Woods

The woods around Bishop Auckland have a proper local following, and Waggy Tail Woods is one of those places where you'll understand why once you're in among the trees. It's a straightforward woodland walk - nothing fancy, no visitor centre, just good solid green space where you can actually breathe. The paths are manageable for families with kids who can handle uneven terrain, and dogs seem genuinely happy here (hence the name, presumably). Allow anything from forty minutes to two hours depending on how lost you want to get in it.

What makes this work is that it's the real deal - not landscaped, not themed, just trees and air and the occasional glimpse back towards Bishop Auckland. You won't find crowds midweek, which is either brilliant or disappointing depending on what you're after. If you're staying at Cragwood or High Farm just down the road, this is an easy morning slot before heading into town proper.

The main thing to know is that there's no infrastructure - no café, no facilities, no admission fee as far as anyone can tell. Come prepared with water and decent shoes. Winter gets muddy here, which is fair warning. It's the sort of place that works best if you're already in the area rather than a specific reason to drive to County Durham, but as a companion to a park holiday nearby it's absolutely worth the short walk from your accommodation. Best in spring or early autumn when the woods feel properly alive.
