Low Pond

Low Pond sits just outside Bishop Auckland in County Durham, a modest stretch of water that's genuinely worth seeking out if you're camping nearby. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - no blaring arcades, no coach parties. The water's calm, ringed by trees, and it's become something of a local spot for a quiet afternoon walk or a bit of birdwatching.

The pond itself isn't enormous, so don't expect Windermere. What you get instead is accessibility. Families with younger children can manage it without the full-day commitment a bigger lake demands. There's enough to hold interest for an hour or so - the waterside path, the possibility of spotting waterfowl, the general sense of being somewhere actually removed from the road. Walkers heading between Cragwood or Stag Park caravan sites (both within a couple of miles) could easily include it as part of a loop.

It's free to visit, naturally. Bring a pair of binoculars if you're into birds; the timing doesn't matter much, though early morning and dusk tend to be quieter. The ground can get boggy after rain, so proper footwear isn't optional.

The real value here is in knowing it exists. If you're camped at one of the holiday parks dotted around Bishop Auckland - Cragwood, Hetherick, or High Farm - Low Pond offers exactly what those types of sites promise: a genuine escape without needing to drive somewhere fancier. It's not spectacular, but it's real, and sometimes that's what you need.
