Waen Bryn-gwenith

The walk up Waen Bryn-gwenith from Conwy takes you into proper hill country without needing a full day's commitment. It's a modest peak by Welsh standards, but don't let that put you off - the views back toward Conwy town and the castle are genuinely worth the leg work, and on a clear day you can see right across to the coast.

This is walker territory, full stop. The kind of place where you'll spend two to three hours on the hill and feel like you've actually done something. Families with older kids will manage it fine; younger ones might struggle with the steeper sections. There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities - you're out on the hill itself, which is rather the point.

The terrain is a mix of woodland lower down and open moorland higher up. It's free to access, naturally, since it's open countryside. Spring and summer are best, though autumn can be spectacular if the weather holds. After a morning on the hill, you're well-positioned to head back into Conwy for lunch and a proper look at the castle.
