Waddesdon Manor

The French château rising out of the Buckinghamshire countryside catches you off guard - all turrets and honey-coloured stone, it looks like someone plucked Versailles and dropped it near Buckingham. Built in the 1880s by the Rothschild family, Waddesdon Manor is unapologetically grand, and that's precisely why it works.

You can wander the grounds for free, which is the smart move if you're just after the exterior and the formal gardens. The wine cellars alone are worth the detour - rows of vintage bottles in temperature-controlled chambers that'll make any enthusiast weak at the knees. Inside, the rooms are stuffed with French furniture, tapestries and art that would take weeks to properly digest. It's not a quick tick-box visit; you need proper time here, ideally a full afternoon.
