Itters Pit

A flooded gravel pit turned wildlife haven just outside Buckingham, Itters Pit is one of those places that rewards a quiet morning walk far more than it does a rushed afternoon visit. The water's clear enough to see why anglers come here regularly, and the banks are ringed with reeds that attract everything from herons to dragonflies depending on the season.

It's genuinely excellent for a couple of hours if you're based at one of the nearby camping spots - Embers Camping in Claydon is barely two miles away, which makes it a sensible leg-stretch between campfire and pub. Bird watchers will find proper value here, especially in spring and autumn migration season. Families with young kids might find it a bit limited after the initial excitement of spotting water birds wears off, though a packed lunch by the water is never a wasted afternoon.

The walk around the perimeter isn't strenuous, so it suits all fitness levels. No facilities to speak of that I could find, so bring what you need. Access appears to be free, though you'll want to check locally if there are any seasonal restrictions or fishing permit requirements if that's your plan.

Barton Hill Farm and Glebe Leisure are also within reasonable striking distance if you're touring the area. Itters Pit works best as part of a broader walking itinerary round Buckingham rather than as a standalone destination, but on a decent day with a proper camera or binoculars, it's time well spent.
