Chilterns Nature - Windmill Hill Walk (Waddesdon Estate)

The walk up Windmill Hill at Waddesdon Estate is a proper leg-stretcher, especially if you're staying at Lashlake Barn and fancy something with a bit of elevation. It's not steep in the way that makes you sweat, but the views across the Chilterns compensate for any huffing and puffing on the way up. Once you reach the top, you can see right across Buckingham way, and on a clear day it's genuinely worth the effort.

This is a nature reserve managed by Chilterns Nature, so expect proper woodland trails rather than manicured parkland. The mix of beech and oak makes it excellent for families with kids old enough to walk a couple of miles without complaining. Spring brings bluebells and wood anemones - May's the best month if you're keen on wildflowers. Birdwatchers should bring binoculars; nuthatches and great spotted woodpeckers are regular sightings.

Allow a good hour and a half for the round trip if you're not rushing. There's a windmill at the top - not operational but it's a decent landmark and explains the name. Admission appears to be free, which is refreshing. The trails can get muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are essential rather than optional.

If you're basing yourself at Lashlake Barn, this is absolutely worth incorporating into a day out. It works perfectly as a morning walk before lunch in Buckingham, and it's the sort of place that feels properly local rather than touristy. Bring a thermos and you're golden.
