Viewpoint

The viewpoint on Mull rewards a bit of effort to get there, though I'd be lying if I said the climb is gentle. Once you're up, though, the panorama across the Sound of Mull and toward the mainland hills properly takes your breath away - assuming the Scottish weather cooperates. On a clear day, which admittedly doesn't happen every week up here, you can see for miles.

This is one for walkers and landscape photographers rather than young children or anyone after a quick photo stop. Allow a good hour for the ascent and descent, and wear proper boots - the paths get boggy. The nearest town is Isle of Mull itself, which has what you'd expect: a few shops, cafes, and that particular Hebridean pace where things move slower and that's entirely the point.

If you're staying at Island Pods just four and a half miles away, this sits nicely into a longer day exploring the island. The viewpoint works best in late spring or early autumn when midges aren't at their worst and you've got decent daylight hours. Free to visit, obviously - it's a Scottish hillside. The real cost is your leg muscles the next morning.
