Viewing Mound

Stone steps carved into a grassy hillside lead to a raised platform that delivers proper views across the Kent countryside. The Viewing Mound is exactly what it says - an artificial hill built specifically for taking in the landscape, and it does the job well enough. From the top, you'll see rolling farmland stretching towards Canterbury's cathedral spires in the distance, with the occasional church tower poking through the trees. It's one of those spots that's better on a clear day when you can actually make out the detail.

Families with energetic kids will get the most from it - the climb takes all of five minutes and there's space at the top for a picnic if you've brought one. Dog walkers seem to favour it too, judging by the well-worn paths. The whole thing feels a bit like a Bronze Age barrow, though it's considerably more recent than that. Worth combining with a trip into Canterbury itself, which is close enough for a proper day out.
