Vetch Field

The Vetch Field nature reserve sits right on Swansea's doorstep, a proper working landscape where industry and wildlife somehow rub along together. It's a former colliery and industrial site that's been left to rewild itself - you get wetlands, grassland, and scattered pools where water birds have moved in without waiting for permission. Nothing manicured about it.

Walkers and birdwatchers will find the most here. Bring binoculars if you've got them; waders, gulls, and ducks use the pools depending on the season. The paths are straightforward rather than dramatic, so it's decent for families who don't need drama-filled vistas, though young kids might run out of steam after an hour. The industrial heritage lingers in odd ways - you'll spot old structures and dig marks in the landscape that tell you what this place used to be.

It's free access, which is always welcome. Allow 90 minutes for a proper look without rushing. Go early morning or late afternoon when birds are more active and fewer people are about.

It's not going to blow your mind, but it's genuine, bird-filled, and costs nothing - that combination makes it worth the detour from your caravan.
