Ulva Garden

You'll need a boat to reach Ulva, and that's rather the point. This wee island off the west coast of Mull feels properly remote, even though it's only a short ferry crossing from the main island. The garden itself is a working estate with woodland walks, a productive kitchen garden, and genuine quiet - the kind where you can actually hear yourself think.

It's less manicured showstopper and more working landscape. You'll find native trees, potager-style vegetable beds, and paths that meander through what feels like genuine countryside rather than curated gardens. The approach depends entirely on what appeals to you. If you're after sculptural topiaries and Instagram moments, this isn't it. If you want to walk somewhere that feels lived-in and purposeful, where the garden serves the people rather than vice versa, then it works brilliantly.

Allow a couple of hours minimum. Walkers will get the most from Ulva - the surrounding landscape is the real draw, with proper coastal views and the kind of isolation that's increasingly rare. Families with restless children might find it a bit slow; there's no playground or attractions beyond the garden itself.

The ferry from Mull takes minutes. Time your visit for decent weather - exposure on the island is real, and a grey drizzly day can flatten even the best intentions.
