About Ullscarf
This one suits walkers who know their way around a map and don't mind a steady grind uphill. It's not a gentle family stroll - expect three to four hours depending on fitness and how often you stop. The terrain is bog in places, particularly after rain, so proper boots matter. On a clear day the vista south towards the Southern Fells and east towards Helvellyn makes it worthwhile. On a grey day you'll be walking through cloud for much of it.
It's free, obviously. The nearest proper base is Ambleside, about 4 miles away. If you're camping locally, Great Langdale Campsite and Great Langdale Glamping are both within striking distance and have excellent reviews. BaysBrown Farm Campsite is slightly further but still manageable. These bases work well for combining Ullscarf with other Lake District walks - you could easily do this as a half-day trip and explore proper tourist spots like Windermere or the Langdale Valley afterwards.
Go in summer when daylight lasts. Autumn can be moody and atmospheric but wet. Winter is genuinely risky unless you know what you're doing.
