Twyn-yr-Allt

The walk up Twyn-yr-Allt is steep, relentless, and absolutely worth it. This isn't a ramble - it's a proper climb through woodland on the outskirts of Hereford, but once you crest the hill the Herefordshire landscape spreads out beneath you like someone's turned the volume up on every colour. Orchards, rolling farmland, the Malverns in the distance if visibility's kind. Twenty minutes of huffing gets you to the summit, maybe forty-five if you're taking it easy with kids in tow.

The peak itself is modest - there's no tearoom or visitor centre, just good views and the satisfaction of having earned them. Best tackled from Hereford town itself, which is barely six miles away, making it ideal for an afternoon sortie if the weather's holding. Go in spring or early autumn when the light's sharp and the paths aren't muddy nonsense.

Walkers will get more from this than casual day-trippers. The woodland canopy on approach is lovely enough, but families expecting a playground or views from a car park will find it underwhelming. This is a hill for people who actually like walking uphill.
