Twyn Disgwylfa

The walk up Twyn Disgwylfa rewards you with proper 360-degree views across the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons - the sort of vista that makes you understand why people move to Mid Wales. It's a genuine peak without being a slog, rising about 1,500 feet from Crickhowell below.

This isn't a manicured tourist spot. There's no visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards. You get a windswept summit with a trig point and wide-open moorland stretching in every direction. Clear days are spectacular; cloudy ones less so, but the moorland grasses still look moody and proper atmospheric.

Walkers will get the most from it - you're looking at roughly an hour up from the base depending on fitness, maybe 90 minutes for a leisurely ramble with photo stops. Families with younger kids might find the moorland terrain a bit relentless and boggy in places, especially after rain. Serious hikers doing a longer loop through the Brecon Beacons will find this a natural waypoint.

It's free, obviously - just park sensibly near Crickhowell and start walking. Go in the morning for the best light, and check the weather first because thick cloud makes this a pointless trudge.

If you're based at Cwmdu Campsite just down the road, this is ideal for stretching your legs between park time. Pencelli Castle is also close enough to make it a half-day excursion from your caravan. Worth the walk? Absolutely, on a clear day. Bit underwhelming if the weather's turned.
